Blue Coat Systems, acquired by Symantec in 2016, is a company that offers software, hardware, and services made for network management and cybersecurity. The company was founded in 1996 as CacheFlow, Inc., and was known as such until 2002.
Blue Coat Systems is best known for its products designed to filter and monitor employee internet activity, as well as for web gateway appliances that authenticate internet users and scan traffic for security threats. These products also manage encrypted traffic and authenticate users.
Blue Coat Systems also developed products for home consumers, including parental control software. At first, the company’s products were sold to internet service providers; they were later intended for large companies.
